How to stay compliant without killing the event buzz
Compliance isn’t quite the Beyoncé of event planning.
You might say it’s less “sexy stiletto” and more “sensible Crocs”. But, when ignoring compliance risks your reputation, cash flow and other more serious things (like human safety), maybe sensible shoes aren’t so bad.
Turns out, the Joint Operations Committee (JOC) can be creativity’s best friend, not its executioner. Oh, and if you want juicy headlines, be 100% sure they aren’t about a disaster caused by non-compliance. Fyre Festival, anyone?
Here’s how to keep people safe and your event compliant:
- Know your acronyms: JOC is a collective that ensures your event says “ra-ra” instead of “raging disaster”. More than paperwork, JOC is your emergency services safety net. Research what JOC covers (traffic flow, emergency access, hospital capacity), and why it matters.
- Make compliance a line item: Compliance involves spending moolla, yes. But so does disaster recovery. Budget for permits, security, medical personnel, waste management, and other services from day dot.
- Partner up: Hire a risk management partner who knows their stuff. Someone who makes your “fire-breathing acrobat suspended from a helicopter” dreams into fully compliant realities without dousing your creative flame. (Bonus: They can also help with the JOC application.)
- Ignorance ain’t bliss: If you don’t know the rules, learn them. Because “But we didn’t know” holds about as much water in court as a colander. Besides, while cutting JOC corners may make things ‘quicker’, it can just as easily come back to bite you in the gluten-free chicken wrap.

EYES ON
Chaos cured, clarity served
Is your brand drowning in complexity? Fear not. Simplr wizardry turns brand spaghetti into Wilson toffees (impossibly solid and profoundly yummy). They craft brand universes in which digital interactions become emotional connections, UI/UX design creates happy hormones (in a good way), and motion design moves your brand forward (literally). Simplr’s philosophy? Radical Simplicity. The team strips away the fluff, amplifies the authentic and delivers powerful brand clarity that speaks louder than noise. Whether you’re launching, rebranding or just gatvol of messy messaging, Simplr is your creative co-pilot. See for yourself.
BY THE WAY
Again with the riddles? Yep!
They speak fluent “engineer” and “creative”. You won’t notice them at events – but you’ll notice if they’re missing. And, while they aren’t musicians, they can tell you exactly how much a flying piano weighs. Who are they?
Technical directors. The highly skilled logistical ninjas who translate the creative director’s “extra” ideas into real life. They have an encyclopaedic knowledge of everything technical – from rigging through sound and lighting to safety standards, and they’re first to arrive at the loading bay before an event.
As our Creative Director, Megan Willson, says, “The relationship between a creative director and a technical director is like a marriage.” And their most underrated superpower? “Writing short, concise, and extremely practical emails.”
So, in future, if you’re trying to decide between paying for a champagne tower or securing the skills of a technical director, pick the TD.
